What is the difference between counseling, or therapy, and coaching?
This is probably the number one question that is asked of coaches. As a licensed professional counselor, I also get asked "what makes you want to be a coach?"
The honest answer I give....
So I can help even more people achieve their goals and live their best lives.
I have spent over ten years working in the mental health field in various settings. What I determined is my favorite thing in all of the positions I have held as a clinician is that I love meeting new people, getting to know who they are, helping them overcome obstacles, and work to achieve their goals.
Expanding into coaching allows me to do that even more.
As a therapist, I work with many amazing clients to overcome their past trauma and examine how it as affected who they are today. We dive deep into their past to assess the obstacles they have experienced in their lives. With this journey, a mental health diagnosis is typically used to help us outline a treatment plan to determine how to incorporate more effective coping skills to manage the past trauma. These skills are also used to help you cope with daily life.
Therapy is often covered by insurance plans. This can be beneficial financially but also comes with many limitations, such as what type of clinician you can see, how many number of sessions you can be seen, and the course of treatment recommended.
Therapy is an amazing tool for those that have not dealt with their past struggles.
Coaching, on the other hand, is not covered by insurance plans. There is the typical "sticker shock" when initially considering working with a coach.
I had the same response when I began working with my own coach.
She then explained to me that investing in coaching was an investment in myself. It made total sense. Because I made that investment in myself, I show up for myself each week and fully engage in my coaching sessions and trainings.
